I am proud to represent the newly formed 591SU Association as Chair. My name is Liam DeMarney and I served on the Unit from 1985 to 1989. After much consultation between the Veterans and Unit Executives during 2024, it was clear that an appetite for an Association was strong and after tireless work Association status was granted. There were some notable moments throughout the first year: Slate tile ceremony at St Clement Danes Church, London; the first summer BBQ and Christmas function; creating a charitable status for the Association. It has been a successful year.
We are hoping that 2025 will attract new memberships, more events and greater exposure for the Association. To that end, the committee has been working tirelessly to create a plan of events that serve to meet these targets. The most important piece of the jigsaw moving forwards is to grow the membership of the Association. There are many challenges presented to new Associations, which can be overcome with a solid and loyal membership base. As with many other organisations, there will be a yearly fee to become an Association member (details are on the Website and Facebook page), but this will bring with it various benefits through the year.
As we are a charitable Association, we will focus on simultaneously raising funds for the Association and charitable organisations. Our main one this year will be a 24-hour walk over 72 miles. Several of the Veterans have already signed up for this event; details are on the website. Later in the year we aim to represent the Association (and Unit) at the Remembrance Parade. More detail from me will follow. Finally, we look to hold another Summer BBQ and Christmas function. But, we cannot achieve much of this without you.
So, if you are reading this and have served on 591SU, I encourage you to visit the home page of this website for details on how to join.
